Abstract: Securing Mobile Broadband Access

Security models for mobile business using Wi-Fi broadband access require a different emphasis than the traditional general purpose models for securing Wi-Fi within the corporate LAN. Currently, standards groups and Wi-Fi equipment vendors have focused primarily on securing Wi-Fi access to the corporate LAN. As a result, the security solutions that are evolving are more complex, costly and require greater administration than can be justified for mobile broadband users such as consultants, business partners, customers and allied professionals. An optimum solution for mobile user access that meets cost and simplicity requirements would provide complimentary yet controlled Wi-Fi access to services such as the Internet, local printing and faxing, local file and application servers without the need for local support and administration. In effect, what is needed is a self provisioned authentication and audit system providing a traceable identity for the mobile business user. Sesame Networks provides such a managed solution.
